The first step in building a website is often getting stuck on the domain name. Looking at the dozens of domain extensions on the registration page—.com, .cn, .net, .top, .xyz…—choosing the right one becomes the first challenge for many beginners. Domain names are simple in some ways, but complex in others. Essentially, they are your "address" on the internet, but a good choice directly affects whether visitors remember you, can find your site, and even whether they trust you.

Common domain extensions can be divided into three main categories:

Generic Top-Level Domains: These were among the earliest extensions, targeting specific industries or purposes. For example, .com was initially for commercial organizations, .net for internet service providers, and .org for non-profit organizations. These restrictions have long since disappeared, and anyone can register them.

Country Code Top-Level Domains: These represent specific countries or regions, such as .cn for China and .jp for Japan. These extensions usually have registration requirements; for example, .cn requires a Chinese ID card or business license.

New generic top-level domains: A large number of new domain extensions were introduced after 2010, such as .blog, .tech, .top, and .shop. There are many types and a wide range of choices, and the first-year price is often very low.

How to choose mainstream domain extensions? A table explains it all.

Application scenarios, advantages, disadvantages, and annual fees for each domain extension.

suffix Applicable Scenarios advantage shortcoming Annual Fee Reference
.com Almost all websites Highest brand recognition, globally applicable, and naturally trusted by users. Good names have basically all been snapped up. First year ¥50-100, renewal ¥120-150
.cn Websites targeting Chinese users Fast access within China, high trust among local users, registration required. Registration is limited to entities registered in China and requires real-name authentication. First year ¥30-50, renewal ¥50-80
.net Technology websites and developer blogs Strong technical attributes, preferred among alternative solutions Recognition level is only about 60% of that of .com. Similar to .com
.top Marketing pages, personal blogs, creative projects Extremely cheap for the first year (¥10-30), with many names to choose from. Renewal fees may double, and user trust is lower than with traditional suffixes. First year ¥10-30, renewal ¥60-100

  Three Tips for Beginners

  1. Prioritize .com domains; if you can't get one, consider others.

.com is the most valuable domain extension globally, accounting for over 70% of the market share. Users naturally perceive a .com domain as a legitimate website. If your budget allows and the name is still available, go for .com; there's no question about it.

If your ideal name is already registered, try adding a prefix or suffix, such as changing myblog.com to myblog365.com or getmyblog.com. The key is to keep it short, memorable, and easy to type. Avoid using hyphens (-), such as in my-blog.com, as users might easily miss them, diverting traffic to other sites.

  2. For domestic users, .cn is a reliable alternative.

If your website primarily serves Chinese users, .cn domains offer good resolution speed and trustworthiness within China. However, please note two points: First, registration requires real-name authentication; individuals use their ID cards, and companies use their business licenses. Second, if using a domestic server, the .cn domain must be filed with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to be accessible.

  3. Beware of the "low price for the first year, high price for renewal" trap

Many new domain extensions offer only a few dollars or even free registration for the first year, attracting you to register, but the renewal fee for the second year may increase several times over. When registering, pay close attention to the renewal price, don't just focus on the first year's promotional price.

  Do two things while registering:

First, enable privacy protection. Without it, your name, email, and phone number will be in the WHOIS database, accessible to anyone, leading to spam and harassing calls. Most reputable registrars now offer this service for free.

Second, set up automatic renewal. Expired domains don't immediately disappear, but once the grace period has passed and the domain is released, it's difficult to register it again; you might have to pay a high price to redeem it or it might be snatched up by someone else.

For beginners choosing a domain name for their personal website, the safest approach is to prioritize .com. If that's already taken, consider .net or .cn. Don't be tempted by cheap, unusual new domain extensions. Domain registration fees are only a few tens to a hundred yuan per year, but changing them is a complex undertaking – it means changing website links, rebuilding search engine trust, and notifying all existing users. The cost far outweighs the small difference in renewal fees. Choosing a reliable domain extension from the start is far more worry-free.
