  Many business managers have a naive belief when choosing SSL certificates: the more expensive, the more secure; the higher the level of the certificate, the more legitimacy of the website. Therefore, when service providers recommend EV (Extended Validation) certificates, many companies grit their teeth and pay thousands or even tens of thousands of yuan a year. But the question is, is an EV certificate really necessary for an ordinary corporate website—the kind that displays company introductions, product information, and contact details, and occasionally posts news updates? My answer is clear: the vast majority of ordinary corporate websites do not need EV certificates at all. It's more like paying for a false sense of security rather than being based on genuine business needs.

  First, let's understand what exactly an EV certificate adds.

  SSL certificates are divided into three levels of verification depth: DV (Domain Validation), OV (Organization Validation), and EV (Extended Validation).

  A DV certificate only verifies your ownership of the domain name. The application process can be completed in just a few minutes, and a small padlock icon appears in the browser's address bar.

  An OV certificate, in addition to verifying domain ownership, also verifies the company's business registration information. The company name will be displayed in the certificate details.

  EV certificates are the most rigorously verified level, requiring a complete set of materials including a business license, legal representative's identity certificate, and even office address and phone number. They are only issued after manual review.

  In earlier browser versions, EV certificates enjoyed a "special privilege"—the address bar directly displayed the company name in green, making it very eye-catching. In that era, the green address bar became a visual symbol of "large enterprises," inspiring many ordinary companies to follow suit. However, this was before 2018. After the release of Chrome 69 in 2018, Google removed the green address bar display for EV certificates, and in 2021, Chrome 93 completely removed all UI distinctions for EV certificates. Now, whether you have DV or EV installed, the address bar in Chrome and Edge shows only a padlock icon, making them completely indistinguishable. The only way to see detailed EV certificate information is through the "Certificate Details" panel hidden in a third-level menu—who would click on that? This leads to the first core question: the biggest advantage of EV certificates—the "prestige" factor—has been ended by browser vendors themselves. The green address bar you paid a premium for is long gone.

  Since the visual advantage is gone, is an EV certificate far superior to DV and OV certificates in terms of security?

  In terms of encryption strength, the answer is no. All SSL certificates use the same TLS encryption protocol, and the encryption algorithm and key length can be matched exactly. EV certificates don't provide stronger encryption, nor do they make your website more "secure." They simply verify that your company actually exists. In other words, DV certificates can prevent data eavesdropping, while EV certificates can prevent "you claiming to be a certain company but actually not"—for ordinary corporate websites, the latter is almost redundant. Because your website itself doesn't involve online transactions, collect sensitive personal information, or require user login, even if a man-in-the-middle attack tamperes with the page content, it has absolutely nothing to do with whether the "company identity has been verified."

  The scenarios where EV certificates are truly needed are few and far between.

  One is financial, banking, and payment websites. In these scenarios, users genuinely need to confirm that they are visiting a legitimate bank website and not a phishing site, and the strict verification of EV certificates can play a role.

  Secondly, some multinational corporations require EV certificates as part of identity verification in their internal systems or supplier portals through their IT departments.

  Thirdly, compliance audits in certain countries or industries explicitly require OV or higher certificates. However, if you're simply selling products and showcasing your company image, an EV certificate isn't even on the compliance list.

  So, what should a typical corporate website choose?

  A DV certificate is perfectly adequate for most display-oriented websites. If your website is just an "online business card," with no user logins, no online payments, and no sensitive data transmission, a DV certificate costing tens of yuan annually or even free is sufficient. The most cost-effective option is an OV certificate. If you want your company name to appear in the certificate details for branding purposes, an OV certificate costing a few hundred yuan annually can meet this need, which is one-third to one-fifth the price of an EV certificate. As for EV certificates, unless you meet the special scenarios mentioned earlier, my advice is to skip them entirely.

  Ultimately, is an EV certificate necessary for a typical corporate website? My conclusion remains firm: no. The core value of an EV certificate—identity verification and visual identity—is almost negligible for a typical display-oriented website. Its rigorous verification process and expensive annual fee feel more like paying for something "unnecessary." When browser address bars no longer differentiate between DV and EV, when users can't even see the company name in the certificate, and when you spend thousands of dollars a year for the same encryption as a free certificate, that money is essentially wasted. Instead of throwing money at EV certificates, it's better to invest your budget in website content development, page loading speed optimization, and mobile adaptation—areas that truly impact user experience. That's where users will feel a sense of "security" and "professionalism." As for SSL certificates, choosing the right level is enough—DV is for beginners, OV is reliable, and EV is for those who truly need it.
